Music at S. Barnabas'
We value music at S. Barnabas'. Several concerts take place here throughout the year and details of these appear on this website. we are currently hoping to find funding to restore our magnificent Lewis organ to its original glory.
The Parish Choir: Our choir sings every Sunday morning and on Feast days and special occasions. We use a variety of settings during Mass, often Shaw's Gloria and Creed during Ordinary Time and Marbeck's during Lent and Advent. The congregation join in with most singing. For many years the choir has been ably led by Frances Lee, who also plays the organ for us. Frances is standing down as Director of Music this Advent to take a well earned rest. She will sontinue to be involved however and will become our first 'Director of Music Emerita' in recognition of her outstanding dedication over the years. We are extremely grateful to her.
Our New Director of Music: We are delighted that from Advent 1 2006 (December 3rd) our new Director of Music will be Hilary Davan Whetton. Until recently Hilary has been Head of Music at Tonbridge school. He is also Musical Director of the City of London Choir, the Guildford Choral Society, and the Milton Keynes City Orchestra. He has made many accomplished recordings over the years. Hilary appears frequently as guest conductor with choirs and orchestras in Britain and overseas, and performs regularly on BBC Radio 3. He has been awarded honorary degrees by the Open University and de Montfort University. In February he appears on television - teaching comedienne Jo Brand to play the organ! Hilary is married to Tonia, a consultant physician and has several children to help keep him young! We very much look forward to welcoming the whole family into life at S. Barnabas'
